Biography
Odette Laroche Artist
Being an artist at heart from a very young age I was always drawn to any form of art oil painting took hold when I was eighteen. Mostly self-taught since then I painted through the years and in the fall of 1999 I found myself on Vancouver Island and enrolled at Victoria College of Art and graduated in 2002. This was an enlightening experience that bought me up to date in the arts. |
Colour and composition are most intriguing to me and the application of colours melding together and complementing each other is fascinating as they mix optically and create a new hue. Use of large canvas surfaces allows the viewer to physically enter into an emotional experience. The intention is to place the viewer in the scene thus participating with the artist. Passion is provoked in me by nature's various, sometimes violent, cloud displays, portrayed through colours, shapes, intensity, and mark making with use of palette knife, brushes and layered applications of oil paints that transport the viewer from one focal point on the canvas to another while holding the interest through content, colour, composition, texture, subject matter and dramatic contrast achieved through the calculated use of warm and cool, and light and dark.
Post impressionistic style of painting that celebrates nature with its many daily dramas is expressive and precisely my own that has evolved over time. Bold marks of layered hues optically mix creating a dazzling symphony of dramatic forms and colours. Contrast and dynamic composition engage the viewer only to discover something previously gone un-noticed. The paintings are executed without photographic reference. They are a result of emotions expressed in paintings. No two are alike.
Dancers or posing models, provide facial studies that reach deep into the soul and psychology of the subject like a novel that unravels the personal path taken through expression and line leaving mystery that captivates and raises questions. Mannerisms, authoritative presence, compassion, kindness, innocence, youth, age and wisdom all are evidence captured.
