Bill was born in England in 1947 and spent the majority of his life in Cornwall. He immigrated to Canada with his family in the early 90's and currently resides in Cobble Hill. Despite his father's wish that he should get a trade and work for living at age fifteen, Bill always wanted to be an artist. He has enjoyed painting all his life but did not receive formal art training until his 20's. He was trained to paint in oils but since moving to Canada has evolved into the three- dimensional world of carving and sculpture. Bill uses hand tools for all his work as he finds that he gets more in touch with the stone this way. His sculptures are tactile, and inviting a touch. He looks for a fluid movement into his work, keeping away from too many details. The result is faceless figures that portray the personality and mood of the sculpture with simple form. When Bill looks at a piece of stone he may see a back or a shoulder in it and this has to be worked first, then the stone may sit on a shelf until the rest of the sculpture communicates and reveals itself. Most likely Bill senses how to proceed and finishes the stone into a communicating figure. Whether it is the form of a woman or a musician, the sculpture has personality.
Bill finished art school in England as a professional artist. His medium was paintings. Although very skill in painting Bill has made a career with Brazilian soapstone sculpture. He has had numerous one man show and group shows and his style is recognized and collected across Canada. Each of his series of musicians were puchased by one collector.
